Latvian Brass Blasted

RIGA, Latvia () -- Prime Minister Andris Skele demanded Wednesday that Latvia's armed forces chief be ousted for a series of deadly incidents in the military, news reports said.

The prime minister called for the dismissal of Juris Dalbins, the military's commander in chief, as he addressed parliament leaders, according to Interfax and the Baltic News Service. Parliamentary approval is needed for the step.

Skele's aide, Jurgis Liepnieks, said a border guard shot and killed himself while he was drunk late Monday.

Last month, two Latvian servicemen reportedly were killed by drunken comrades, and the disappearance of 13 Kalashnikov rifles from a border guard battalion led to the dismissal of Latvia's border guards commander.
