Karadzic's Role Unclear

PALE, Bosnia-Herzegovina () -- Even after meeting with Radovan Karadzic's designated successor, an overseer of Bosnia's peace plan said Tuesday he can't tell if the Bosnian Serbs' wartime leader has really given up power.

Carl Bildt met with Karadzic's handpicked replacement, Biljana Plavsic, at Serb headquarters in nearby Pale. After three hours of talks, he said he still was reserving judgment on who is the true leader of the Bosnian Serbs.

On Sunday, Bildt said he had written assurances from Karadzic that he was stepping aside as president of Republika Srpska, the Bosnian Serbs' self-styled state. Hours later, however, Plavsic said her boss remained president -- only without his powers.
