Obshchaya Gazeta asked various leading political and artistic figures what their first words would have been if the Communists won the election.

Bulat Okudzhava, writer: It is better to stay in place than to go backward. Alexander Yakovlev, Russian Academy of Sciences: I would keep the words to myself -- they wouldn't make it past the censor. Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet president: People, be very careful. Vasily Aksyonov, writer: We got what we deserved. Yevgeny Saburov, economist: They can't change anything. Mark Rudinshtein, director of the Kinotavr film festival: There wouldn't be any words, only despair and fury. Ella Pamfilova, State Duma deputy: This could never be! Oleg Poptsov, writer: It's not yet evening. Andrei Makarevich, musician: These words couldn't be printed.
