Burundi Requests UN

GENEVA () -- Ethnic clashes have forced 6,500 people from Burundi to flee their homes in the area where three international Red Cross workers were killed last month, the UN commissioner said Friday.

Burundi's government has asked for a team to assess needs in the northwest region where stepped-up fighting has left food, medicine, blankets and water in short supply, said Ron Redmond, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

There have been no international relief workers in Cibitoke province since early June when three workers were killed while delivering water and medical supplies to civilians.

Redmond said sending a UNHCR fact-finding team would depend on the security in the area.
