Blackout Relief Sent

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin has ordered emergency fuel supplies sent to the Far East to relieve a power crisis there, a spokesman said Thursday.

"We expect fuel supplies to reach the area in the nearest future. Now it's only a matter of transportation," Viktor Konnov, the prime minister's spokesman, said in a telephone interview. The order was signed Wednesday, he said.

Power cuts in the huge Primorsky region began last week, and by Thursday most homes and factories were getting only three hours of electricity a day, Interfax reported.

The area's main power supplier, Dalenergo, is owed 1.5 trillion rubles ($300 million) by customers and the government and has no money to buy fuel oil, officials said.
