Baia to Barsa

BARCELONA, Spain () -- Barcelona signed Portugese goalkeeper Vitor Baia in a surprise move late Thursday after a deal with Germany's Andreas Koepke apparently fell through.

Barcelona chairman Jose Luis Nunez said Baia, 26, had signed an eight-year contract. Spanish news agency EFE said he could get $1.55 million a season.

The Gatalan club's new coach Bobby Robson turned to Baia, who was with him at Portuguese club Porto, after running into problems confirming a deal with Koepke, who helped Germany to win the European championship last month.

Koepke had agreed to move from Eintracht Frankfurt to VfB Stuttgart before Euro 96. But after three hours of arbitration talks Thursday the German Soccer Federation announced the player would be free to go to Barcelona instead. But almost at the same moment, Nunez announced the signing of Baia.
