15 Tons of Shells Found

KHABAROVSK, Far East () -- Residents of Russia's Far East found about 15 tons of old artillery shells Thursday dating back to World War II.

The shells were found on the site of an old military depot near a highway 50 kilometers from Khabarovsk, a city 6,100 kilometers east of Moscow, Itar-Tass reported.

Experts determined that the shells dated to World War II. They were deciding how to deal with the dangerous find, the report said.

The Soviet Union kept troops in the Far East during World War II as a deterrent to a feared invasion by Japan, which had troops stationed across the border in China.
