BORN: June 26, 1944, in the village of Mymrino, Orlovskaya OblastEDUCATION:

Doctor of philosophy from the Academy of Social Science of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), 1981.

Graduate of the Orlov State Teachers Institute


1961- : high school math teacher, then taught at the Teachers Institute, work in the region's youth communist league (Komsomol); rose through local, city and then oblast party committees to head the Department of Propaganda and Agitation of the Orlovskaya Oblast Party Committee.

1983-89: instructor, then head of a sector in the propaganda department of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Central Committee.

1989-90: deputy to the chief of the CPSU Central Committee's Ideology Department.

1990-91: a founder and Politburo member of the Communist Party of the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic.

1992: one of the founders and leaders of the National

Salvation Front and of the Russian National Assembly (Sobor).

1993: elected chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.

1993-96: elected deputy to the State Duma on the Communist Party's federal list and headed the Communist faction in the Duma, re-elected in 1995 and took credit for party's placing first with 22 percent of the vote.


Silver Medal for good high school grades (all As and one B);

Mikhail Sholokhov prize for literature, 1996 for his voluminous politico-philosophical tractatuses (previous winners include Radovan Karadzic and Fidel Castro)

Honorary diploma from Academy of Sociological Investigations.
