U.S. Official in China

BEIJING () -- Leading U.S. negotiator Lee Sands on Monday visited the southern province of Guangdong, the alleged heart of copyright piracy in China, just one week before multibillion dollar trade sanctions are to take effect.

Chinese officials said Guangdong authorities planned to present Sands with a round-up of their achievements in battling the theft of intellectual property, including the closure last week of four illegal video and laser disc assembly lines.

Beijing is trying to convince the United States that it is stamping out copyright piracy as the two sides work to avert what would be a multibillion-dollar, cross-Pacific trade war.
