Two French Overturn

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia () -- The French skipper of a yacht that had been leading a transatlantic race was hanging onto his overturned vessel late Sunday awaiting rescue, search and rescue authorities said.

The 18-meter yacht, floating about 350 kilometers southeast of Halifax, was the second French trimaran to capsize in the 5,200-kilometer race of solo sailors after a similar incident Thursday.

Its skipper, Francis Joyaon, 40, had been leading the race to Newport, Rhode Island, from Plymouth, England, by about 320 kilometers, the Canadian Press reported. Last Thursday, the search center helped rescue another French yachtsman whose trimaran overturned about 1,500 kilometers east of Newfoundland.
