Turks Take Offensive

SEMDINLI, Turkey () -- Some 5,000 Turkish troops supported by attack helicopters Thursday went into northern Iraq in the second offensive this month against Kurdish rebel bases, semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The same number of soldiers carried out operations across the border two weeks ago, claiming to have killed about 160 guerrillas.

Iraq criticized the last incursion, which lasted five days. Baghdad has no control over the area where a de facto autonomous Kurdish state, protected by a U.S.-led allied air force, has been set up following the Gulf War.
