Trademark Violations

According to the general director of Soyuzpatent, Mr. Gorodissky, there were some 30 cases of Russian firms forging the trademarks of leading Western companies last year.

Mr. Gorodissky said that the existence of this illegal business is due in part to inadequate Russian laws, which do not completely cover the consequences for using someone else's trademark.

Last year Russian law enforcement officials ran into a number of problems when they closed about 10 companies for forgery. For instance, they began to investigate the Russian firm responsible for the production and sale of the chocolate bar Kickers, the trademark of which was an exact copy of the Snickers mark, which belongs to the Mars company. Despite the obvious forgery, it took quite some time for officials to prove that the law had been broken.

According to Mr. Gorodissky, it is best to protect oneself from such dishonest competitors through the mandatory registration of all trademarks with Soyuzpatent and routine advertising on television and in the press.
