Thousands Rally for Kids

WASHINGTON -- Some 200,000 children and adults rallied here to "Stand for Children" in an event that mixed the flavors of religious revival meetings and the U.S. civil rights demonstrations of decades ago.

Saturday's rally was enmeshed in election-year political debate as critics accused it of defending a failed big-government welfare system.

The rally was sponsored by 3,000 organizations nationwide. Police estimated the crowd at 200,000.

Marian Wright Edelman, head of the Children's Defense Fund, which organized the rally, said: "We do not stand here advocating big government. We stand here advocating just government, a government that does not give more to those who have and less to those who have not."
