Ter-Petrosian Tapped

YEREVAN, Armenia () -- Levon Ter-Petrosian, Armenia's first democratically elected president, has been nominated to stand for re-election in September's balloting.

Russian news agencies said he got unanimous support Saturday from delegates to a congress of the ruling Armenian Nationwide Movement.

Ter-Petrosian was granted sweeping new powers last July in a new constitution approved by voters during the country's first post-Soviet parliamentary elections. But international observers said the vote was not fair, marred by the government's refusal to let nine opposition parties participate.
