Soldiers Quell Protest

JAKARTA, Indonesia () -- Backed by armored cars, hundreds of soldiers swinging batons broke up a demonstration Thursday by about 5,000 opposition party activists. Protest leaders said 73 people were injured.

Reporters saw dozens of protesters fall on the ground with bleeding injuries. One person was run over by a jeep in which some protesters were trying to flee.

A senior protest leader, Manggara Siahaan, earlier reported three people were killed, but later retracted the claim, saying he was misinformed by his colleagues.

He said 73 people were injured, six of them seriously. Police said 52 people were arrested.
