BORN: Sept. 21, 1951, in Krasnogorsk,

Moscow OblastEDUCATION:

1974: Graduated from the Kaliningrad Higher Military-Engineering Vocational School

1978: Graduated from the All-Union Scientific Engineering-Construction Institute

1996: Doctor of political science.


1976-78: headed a scientific team at the Institute of Cosmic Investigations, charged with building robotic landing devices for the exploration of other planets. Research was apparently discntinued as unnecessary after America's Voyager space craft found no signs of life on Mars,

1978-89: rose through the ranks of Glavmosoblstroi, the largest Soviet-era construction company in the Moscow oblast to head a department charged with maintaining the oblast's centralized heating system.

1991-: director of the fund "Economic and Social Reform," founded with economist Stanislav Shatalin.

1992-93: an unpaid and unofficial "adviser" to a vice premier of the Russian government. Also served as an unpaid and unofficial adviser to then-Speaker of the State Duma Ivan Rybkin.

1996: founder and chairman of the Socialist Peoples Party of Russia.

INTERESTS: Fishing, dog training.
