Rain Washes Out Witty's Track Record

TREXLERTOWN, Pennsylvania -- The day wasn't exactly a song that began with "Rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens,'' and it didn't end up as one of the favorite things for Christine Witty.

The rider from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Witty posted a track record and World Championship qualifying time in a Tuesday morning run of the women's 500 meters during the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Cycling at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome in Trexlertown.

And then the raindrops hit the rose petals, so to speak.

Witty, part-time cyclist, part-time speed-skater, won the world championship of speedskating in sprints.

Tuesday, she posted the fastest time in the women's 500 meter cycling event. Unfortunately, afternoon rain annulled her record achievement since other riders did not have a chance to compete.

"I don't know, it wasn't that big of a thing,'' Witty said. "Another day, another laugh and a half."
