Police on Pre-Poll Alert

MOSCOW () -- Russian police will be put on alert beginning June 5 in preparation for the June 16 presidential election, the head of the Interior Ministry's public order department said Monday.

Major General Ivan Golubev told a news conference that 20,000 police officers, 2,000 interior troops and 1,000 cadets from Interior Ministry schools would be put on duty in Moscow, reinforcing existing patrols by 25 percent, Interfax reported.

"Special attention is being given to the protection of banks and the storage of arms, explosives and drugs," he said, adding that "streets, railroad terminals and other key facilities in Moscow will be cleared of homeless people."
