Norilsk Nickel Workers Stage 3-Day 'Soft' Strike

More than 10,000 workers in the Arctic town of Norilsk continued a three-day strike Monday over living conditions and other issues at metals giant Norilsk Nickel, a Uneximbank spokesman said.

The current action, which began Saturday, was "a soft form of strike in which employees continue their work but don't distribute the end products on the market," said the representative of the bank, which controls a 38 percent stake in Norilsk.

The workers plan to take new action June 6, the day after the Norislk Nickel president and representatives of Uneximbank are due in town.

Boris Gulevich, technical questions director at Norilsk, said the strike would cut Norilsk output by about 12 percent, Reuters reported.
