Noodles With a Kick

KHABAROVSK, Far East () -- Customs agents seized a batch of ephedrine, an herbal stimulant, that was smuggled into Russia from China in noodle packages, a report said.

The agents arrested the Chinese smuggler with 8 kilograms of ephedrine in Khabarovsk, on the border with China in Russia's Far East, Itar-Tass said Sunday.

It was the biggest seizure this year of ephedrine, which is derived from Asian plants, the report said. When mixed with caffeine or some other products, ephedrine can cause a range of reactions, including dizziness, stomach distress, psychosis or death. Ephedrine comes in pill, powder or liquid form, with package labels that claim or imply the products produce feelings associated with illegal drugs, including euphoria.
