NATO Mum on Lebed

BRUSSELS () -- NATO countries shed few tears Tuesday over the sacking of Pavel Grachev as Russia's defense minister and predicted the promotion of tough-talking general Alexander Lebed would have little impact on foreign policy.

"No change ... things won't get worse, maybe they won't get better either but they won't get worse," said one senior NATO official.

NATO sources said Lebed's elevation to the inner councils of the Kremlin was almost entirely for reasons of domestic politics and his new role would focus on internal matters, such as a tough drive on organized crime.
