Mall Blast Kills 44

SAO PAULO, Brazil () -- As frantic relatives rushed to hospitals, rescue workers said Wednesday there was little hope of finding more survivors of a shopping mall explosion that killed 44 people and injured more than 100 others.

Although the mall was built barely a year ago, state police said there was no suspicion of faulty workmanship. Authorities said the cause of the explosion was unknown; press reports blamed a gas leak.

Rescue workers used lanterns, sensors and dogs to search the debris of the Plaza Shopping Center in the suburb of Osasco, about 16 kilometers west of Sao Paulo. The explosion ripped through the mall at lunchtime Tuesday.
