NAME: Lebed, Alexander Ivanovich

BORN: April 20, 1950, in Novocherkassk, Rostov region


1969-73: graduated Armavirskoye Military Academy, parachutist school

1982-85: graduated with honors from Frunze Military School


1973-81: platoon and then company commander, Armavirskoye Military Academy

1981-82: served in Afghanistan as commander of the 345th Army Airborne Division.

1985-91: senior commands in Russia rising to commander of the Tula Airborne Division with the rank of lieutenant general. In 1991, at the request of Airborne Commander Pavel Grachev, directed his division to come to the defense of democratic forces in the White House during the August putsch.

1992-95 Commander of the 14th Army based in the Transdnestr region of the republic of Moldova. Used his troops to end a civil war between ethnic Romanian and ethnic Russian residents of the region.

1995: Retired from the army and elected to State Duma. Joined and then split with Congress of Russian Communities after a disastrous performance at the polls in 1995.


Recipient of a number of military awards, including the Red Star for service in Afghanistan; status of candidate master as a boxer


Owns a dog and a cat but loves the dog more; is married and has three children; runs every day and enjoys skiing.

N.B.: gave up drinking Dec.25, 1993 in order to become "the only person in the whole country who is sober on principle."
