Land Market Opens U

VILNIUS () -- Lithuania's parliament passed a key constitutional amendment Thursday allowing foreigners to buy nonagricultural land for business purposes, the state-owned ELTA news agency said.

The amendment was seen as vital to boost foreign interest in Lithuania, though it applies only to the so-called G-24 group of developed countries and states of Central and Eastern Europe.

The exclusion of Russia and other CIS states was made at the insistence of right-wingers, who feared the country's eastern neighbors would come to dominate the land market.
