Jail Terms Requested

KINSHASA, Zaire () -- Zaire's state prosecutor has asked a court for two-year jail terms and fines for two Russian pilots whose plane crashed into a market in the capital Kinshasa in January killing more than 300 people.

Nikolai Kazaribe and Andrei Gouscov are charged with manslaughter over the Jan. 8 crash of their Antonov-32 cargo plane. Both plead not guilty.

"They lacked care and foresight, they showed carelessness by embarking on takeoff of the aircraft when the requisite speed had not yet been reached," said prosecutor Mukenge Bisimbula on Monday.

The state is also seeking six-month jail terms and fines for two air traffic controllers charged with being absent from their posts.

No firm date has been set but the case is expected to resume next Monday.
