Hunger Strike Begins

SOSNOVY BOR, Northern Russia () -- The trade union leader at a nuclear power plant in this northern Russian city went on a hunger strike Monday to press demands for the payment of back wages.

The striking leader, Alexander Barantsov, said other plant operators are continuing their work as normal, but hold meetings after each 8-hour shift.

"Our actions of protest are being held in accordance with the law and do not pose any threat to the production cycle of the Leningrad nuclear power plant," he told Itar-Tass. The plant, located near St. Petersburg, is a principal source of energy for the area.
