Germany Blasts Liechtenstein Before Departing for England

MANNHEIM, Germany -- Germany warmed up for its Euro 96 campaign with a 9-1 trouncing of Liechtenstein, producing a goal festival in its last game before traveling to England.

Following a 1-1 draw against Northern Ireland and a 1-0 loss to France last week, the Germans switched into high gear Tuesday against the inexperienced part-timers and could have scored a dozen more. "We should not draw any conclusions from this game, because the opponent was not of a high standard. We still need some fine-tuning,'' said sweeper Matthias Sammer.

Coach Berti Vogts said his team was relaxed after taking two days off from training: "We know where we are, we still need to work on free kicks and other things. It was a good training game.''

Vogts began the match without captain Juergen Klinsmann, suspended for Germany's opening Euro 96 match against the Czech Republic on Sunday.

The Netherlands 3, Ireland 1.

Dennis Bergkamp led the Dutch to a morale-boosting 3-1 victory over Ireland here Wednesday in the Netherlands' last match before opening its Euro 96 campaign against Scotland next Monday.

Arsenal striker Bergkamp opened the Dutch scoring in the 26th minute with a lob, before setting up second-half goals for Clarence Seedorf and Phillip Cocu. Seedorf was freed by a Bergkamp pass over Ireland's static defense in the 76th minute.

Bringing the high-bouncing ball skillfully under control, Seedorf then hammered it past the despairing dive of Ireland keeper Shay Given.
