Fleet Won't Clean Spill

MURMANSK, Far North () -- About 400 tons of aircraft fuel leaked from a pipeline belonging to Russia's Northern Fleet, which has refused to clean it up, environmentalists have said.

The fuel leaked into Lake Olenye, near the fleet's Far North base at Severomorsk, 1,500 kilometers north of Moscow, members of the Murmansk committee for ecology and environment told a news conference Friday, according to Russian news agencies.

The lake was covered with a film of oil 10 millimeters thick over about 16,000 square meters, Interfax said.

The environmentalists said they discovered the spill Tuesday but that it apparently occurred weeks before. They said they contacted fleet officials but that no cleanup steps had been taken.
