First Votes Cast

MOSCOW () -- Early voting in Russia's presidential election began over the weekend as merchant seamen cast their ballots in Russia's Pacific port of Vladivostok, Itar-Tass said Monday.

Most Russians will go to the polls Sunday, June 16. But those living and working in remote parts of the world's largest country traditionally vote early as do sailors and others who will be out of the country on polling day.

A spokesman for the Central Election Commission in Moscow said voting officially began June 1, but he had no details of exactly where voting had started. Nomadic reindeer herdsman in Arctic regions are usually among the first to vote.
