English Crush Dutch, Both Advance

WEMBLEY, England -- Two goals each from Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham powered England to a spectacular 4-1 victory over the Netherlands Tuesday. But a late reply by Dutch substitute Patrick Kluivert kept his team in the competition.

After England scored three goals in a 10-minute second half spell, it looked as if the Dutch, champion in 1988 and one of the favorites, were going out. The Scots appeared to be headed for the quarterfinal for the first time as their 1-0 victory over the Swiss put them level on points.

But Kluivert's 72nd minute goal with his team 4-0 down, meant the Dutch went through instead on the basis they had scored more goals than the Scots, three instead of one.

Instead, England, as Group A winner faces Group B runner up Spain at Wembley on Saturday and the Dutch meet Group B winner France at Anfield the same day.
