Dudayeva for Yeltsin

MOSCOW ( ) -- The wife of slain Chechen rebel leader Dzhokhar Dudayev said she would vote for Boris Yeltsin in presidential elections because he could protect democracy and freedom in Russia, a news agency said Wednesday.

Alla Dudayeva also told a women's forum in Moscow on Wednesday that she hoped Yeltsin intended to stop the war in Chechnya, the breakaway Russian republic of which her husband was president, Interfax said.

"I hope that Yeltsin sincerely wishes to stop the war and establish peace in Chechnya," Dudayeva said. She also said supporting Yeltsin means protecting "democracy and freedom in Russia."

Alla Dudayeva was detained last month by Russian police for traveling on fake identity papers. Yeltsin intervened to have a new passport issued for her.
