Death Toll Reduced

MOSCOW () -- The death toll in Friday's train crash in Siberia has been revised sharply downward to 18 from 50, Interfax reported.

Local authorities in the Kemerovo region said Saturday the death toll stood at 18 and not the 50 previously reported by Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry in Moscow, the agency reported.

President Boris Yeltsin sent condolences to victims and promised aid to the victims' families, Interfax said.

The agency said 45 passengers were also injured when a passenger train hit a group of runaway goods wagons near the station of Litvinovo.
