Cigar Ashes From Mark

NEW YORK () -- Cigar could be racing for the record books again soon. The 1995 Horse of the Year, winner of 15 straight races, worked out smoothly Sunday in preparation for his record race at Arlington Park on July 13. Cigar, apparently recovered from a bruised hoof, is bidding to tie the modern North American record of 16 straight wins set by Citation from 1948 to 1950.

The Arlington Park race, created especially for Cigar, was to be announced at a news conference Monday at the track in the Chicago suburb. The race will offer a $750,000 purse with a $300,000 bonus for the winner. On Sunday, Cigar galloped a half mile in 49:2.5 on Belmont Park's main track.
