BORN: Nov. 23, 1946, in Cherkassk in the Krasnodar region, RussiaEDUCATION:

1963: Graduated from Novocherkassk Polytechnical Institute with a degree in construction engineering.


1969-74: taught construction engineering at the Novocherkassk Polytechnical Institute.

1974-87: as a Soviet "entrepreneur" started his own construction collective, and branched out into farm collectives.

1987-96: created his first major cooperative, a honey-production business; Moved into pharmaceuticals in 1990, taking over Moscow's Kirov plant and renaming it Ferane; Also involved in vodka trade.

1995-96: elected to State Duma, where he is nicknamed "the moonshiner."

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS: No formal awards but claims to be worth $2 billion.

INTERESTS: second wife, Natalia, 30, is five years older than his oldest daughter; has three children, two from his second marriage; owns "between 15 and 20 Mercedes cars"; has sex "three times a day, minimum," down from five times a day in his 20s; owns one cat, three dogs, seven hens, one rooster, rabbits and guinea pigs.

N.B.: Expelled from the Communist Party in 1979 for "petty-bourgeois tendencies," specifically the construction of a three-story house for himself.
