British Beef Meeting

BRUSSELS () -- Britain and its European Union partners faced one of their most important meetings in years Monday when EU farm ministers discuss a possible easing of the bloc's worldwide ban on British beef.

Farm ministers from the 15-nation bloc meet in Luxembourg to consider a European Commission proposal to lift the ban on beef derivatives tallow, gelatine and bull semen.

Britain was expected to outline a framework for lifting the entire ban on its beef, imposed March 27 because of concern about mad cow disease.

British Prime Minister John Major has demanded the EU lift the derivatives ban before London ends a policy of not cooperating with EU business.
