Beef Ban Opposition

BRUSSELS () -- The European Commission will oppose an early resumption of British beef exports to non-EU countries in a revised plan aimed at a gradual lifting of the worldwide ban, EU sources said Tuesday.

"Exports to third countries will be permitted in parallel to phased exports to other EU member states," a source said, referring to a position paper to be discussed by EU commissioners at a meeting in Strasbourg on Tuesday.

The EU's executive commission is due to give its view on a framework, then present it to an EU summit in Florence on Friday. The EU source added that in view of continued strong public health fears in Germany, Austria and other member states, a resumption of British beef exports to EU member states, and therefore non-EU countries, was unlikely for some time.
