Baltic Highway Loan

VILNIUS, Lithuania () -- A $6.7 million loan from the Nordic Investment Bank is in the works for Lithuania to help finance construction of the Via Baltica trans-European highway.

Lithuanian Deputy Communications Minister Algirdas Sakalys told Interfax that final results were expected from loan talks by Tuesday. Lithuania is planning to build 100 kilometers of the highway by the year 2000 for $60 million.

The work will account for one-ninth of the road network from Scandinavia to Poland via the Baltics, Sakalys said. Lithuania has also penned loans with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank for $21 million and $25 million, respectively.
