Zhirinovsky Blasts Aide's Accusation

COMBINED REPORTS

Liberal Democratic Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky on Wednesday criticized a newspaper article in which his former deputy Alexander Vengerovsky said the LDPR "is becoming a criminal party" with ties to the underworld.

"A person who has been in the ranks of a party for six years and now calls it criminal must be sick indeed," Interfax quoted Zhirinovsky as saying. He was reacting to an interview with Vengerovsky published Monday in Izvestia.

Zhirinovsky questioned the accuracy of the Izvestia report, but said, "If Vengerovsky did quite rationally say what the newspaper printed, well, all parties and political associations have their mean guys and adventurers."

Also Wednesday, Zhirinovsky predicted President Boris Yeltsin would win a second term in the June 16 vote -- "and I or [Communist leader] Gennady Zyuganov will be second," he added.

Still, Zhirinovsky said he would be the best president "because Russia needs an emperor ... a president with huge powers similar to those of the tsars or of the [Communist Party's] general secretaries." ()
