U.S. Embassy Refutes Article

"False, malicious and untrue," was the terse reaction of the American Embassy to a report in a Moscow paper Friday that the Embassy was advising all Americans in Moscow to rush to its doors if fighting broke out in Moscow.

The article, entitled "Americans are ready for the worst, too," was published in Friday's Nezavisimaya Gazeta and claimed that Americans living in Moscow had been advised to grab their documents, dress warmly, and take a private car (not a taxi) to the building on the Garden Ring if fighting broke out after the June 16 presidential election.

Nezavisimaya quotes Efroim Sevela, a Soviet emigr? and now an American citizen, who told the reporter that not only did he receive this mysterious warning, but had been allowed into the embassy to see the preparations.

"I have seen there rows of bunk beds and also storage of water and food for American citizens waiting to leave the country," Nezavisimaya quoted Sevela saying.
