UN Arraigns Hutus

ARUSHA, Tanzania () -- A UN tribunal Thursday arraigned the first of three suspects accused of helping organize Hutu extremists to slaughter more than 500,000 Rwandans, most of them minority Tutsis.

Georges Anderson Rutaganda pleaded innocent to committing crimes against humanity, genocide and murder. His trial was postponed until October to give his court-appointed attorney time to prepare a defense.

Jean-Paul Akayesu was expected to be arraigned later Thursday, while Clement Kayishema, the former governor of Kibuye province and the highest-ranking person to be indicted, was to appear before the tribunal Friday.
