Ukraine Miners Blocking Imports of Polish Coal

KIEV -- Some 1,000 miners blockaded railroad tracks in western Ukraine on Wednesday to stop a train bringing in Polish coal, demanding an end to coal imports and millions of dollars in back wages.

The protest has barred all train traffic on a major railway route between Poland and Ukraine, said Oleksandr Kolosok, a top official with Ukraine's coal ministry.

The miners, who haven't been paid in several months, held a demonstration in the western Ukrainian city of Chervonohrad earlier in the day. They were still blocking the tracks late Wednesday evening.

Kolosok defended the Polish imports, saying that coal is used in Ukraine's metallurgy plants because it has higher sulfur content than Ukrainian coal. Ukraine owes its coal miners some $200 million in back pay.
