Suicide Was Anticipated

NEW YORK () -- The Newsweek writer whose questions about Admiral Jeremy Boorda's medals apparently led to the admiral's suicide had speculated beforehand that Boorda might kill himself, the magazine says.

David Hackworth, a part-time contributing Newsweek editor, was pursuing a story that Boorda did not deserve two "V" pins he wore signifying personal valor in Vietnam War combat.

The magazine reports in this week's issue that Hackworth mused to an assistant that if it were known Boorda wrongly wore such insignia, "He might just put a gun to his head." Newsweek said its editors did not learn of the comment until after the suicide.
