Soldier Tried for Journalist's Death

A Russian soldier went on trial Wednesday on charges of misusing his weapon in the slaying of a reporter for a German news agency.

Military officials say Private Sergei Fedotov, 19, shot Natalya Alyakina, who worked for the German RUFA news agency, by accident.

The young recruit is on trial in a military court in the southern city of Lermontov on a charge of misusing a firearm, said Itar-Tass and Interfax. Interfax later said the trial went into recess at the end of the day because not all witnesses were present, and it would likely continue next month.

Alyakina's husband, Giesbert Mrosek, had lobbied hard for murder charges against Fedotov. A German journalist, Mrosek was in the car with his wife when she was shot and killed at a military checkpoint outside of Budyonnovsk on June 17, 1995.
