Season's First No-Hitter

MIAMI () -- Hard-throwing Florida Marlins left-hander Al Leiter pitched the first no-hitter of the season and the first in franchise history, blanking the powerful Colorado Rockies 11-0.

The 30-year-old Leiter retired the last 20 batters he faced as he pitched the majors' first no-hitter since the Los Angeles Dodgers' Ramon Martinez blanked the Marlins last July 14.

Leiter (6-2) walked two, hit a batter and struck out six, including Eric Young on a 3-2 pitch to end Saturday's game.

"This is just unbelievable because I remember when (Dave) Righetti threw his no-hitter," Leiter said, referring to the New York Yankee's July 4, 1984, gem at Yankee Stadium.

"I grew up in New Jersey and I saw that, and I saw how happy he was. But you never know how you're going to react."
