Russians, Chechens Trade Fire

GROZNY -- Russian troops backed by aircraft Monday bombarded a village held by Chechen rebels as insurgents stepped up attacks on government posts in the capital, officials said.

Military officials said government troops were attacking the village of Bamut in western Chechnya.

There was a sharp increase in fighting in Grozny overnight, with rebels attacking government positions in the city, officials said.

Several vehicles had been damaged by mines or gunfire and there had been an undetermined number of civilian casualties, the news agency reported.

Itar-Tass also reported Monday that Russian troops guarding a bridge in the center of Grozny opened fire on a Russian troop column Sunday night in an apparent case of mistaken identity. Several soldiers were wounded.
