Russia-Iraq Spy Alleged

CAIRO -- Egyptian police have detained an Egyptian man on charges of spying for Iraq and Russia, security sources said Sunday.

They said the unidentified man, a former passport control officer, confessed he had been recruited by an Iraqi intelligence officer after he began work at an Iraqi project supervised by the Russian government.

He also said Russian intelligence officers in Baghdad offered him large sums of money for information on key military and civilian projects in Egypt.

The man was entering Egypt allegedly on a mission when he was arrested at the Red Sea port of Noweiba, the sources added.
