KAMPALA () -- President Yoweri Museveni won Uganda's presidential poll by a landslide Saturday, taking 74.2 percent of valid votes, the chief electoral commissioner said.

Stephen Akabway, chairman of the Interim Electoral Commission, announced at Kampala's International Conference Center that Museveni won 4,428,119 valid votes or 74.2 percent of the valid votes.

He said main opposition candidate Paul Ssemogerere won 1,416,139 or 23.7 percent of the valid votes cast and third candidate Mohamed Mayanja took 133,290 or some 2.2 percent.

Museveni's win gives him a five-year term as president.
