Mir Package Launched

MOSCOW -- Russia launched a cargo spacecraft Sunday to take supplies to an international crew aboard the Mir orbital station, a military space forces spokesman said.

The unmanned 7.5-ton Progress M-31 was fired into orbit by a Soyuz-U booster from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 11.04 a.m. Moscow time, the spokesman said.

"The [Progress] craft will carry 1,140 kilograms of fuel and 1,700 kilograms of cargo to Mir, including food, water and medical equipment," he said, adding that the space freighter would dock with the Mir station on Tuesday.
