Liberia Fighting Flares

MONROVIA, Liberia ( -- Heavy fighting has broken out again in Monrovia after a brief lull, with militia battling near the U.S. Embassy and two main bridges leading into Liberia's devastated capital.

In neighboring Ghana, 3,000 Liberian refugees from an overcrowded freighter that docked after 10 days at sea were reportedly receiving aid Wednesday in the western port of Takoradi.

U.S. Marine Colonel Wayne Forbush said Tuesday's fighting in Monrovia was the heaviest since violence erupted five weeks ago. More than 350,000 Liberians have fled to neighboring Ivory Coast and 15,000 to Ghana to escape the civil war, which has killed 150,000 people.
