Kashmiris Vote

SRINAGAR, India () -- At least one person was killed and more than 30 wounded in gunbattles and police action as the troubled Kashmir region voted Thursday in the final phase of India's general elections, witnesses and officials said.

Police said one person was killed and another was wounded when militants and paramilitary Border Security Force troops exchanged fire in Srinagar, the largest city in the Kashmir valley and focus of the six-year-old uprising against Indian rule.

In other violence, witnesses said troops fired in the air and used tear gas shells to break up crowds outside the city's main mosque, injuring 25.
